Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a vein condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in one of the deep veins in your body, usually in the legs. If left untreated, DVT can lead to serious health complications, including a pulmonary embolism, and those with the condition should seek treatment for DVT as soon as possible. At Illinois Vein Specialists, we offer comprehensive vein treatment services to help you get back to feeling your best.
Blood clots that form most often occur in the legs, but they can also appear in the arms, pelvis, or abdomen. When the blood flow in a vein is slow or stagnant, blood clots can form, usually due to immobility, such as being bedridden, surgery, pregnancy, or long-distance travel. The symptoms of DVT include swelling, pain, and tenderness in the affected area. The skin may also be red or warm to the touch.
DVT is different from superficial vein thrombosis, also known as SVT. SVT blood clots form in the superficial veins that rest just under the surface of the skin, and the diagnostic tool used to confirm SVT is Venous Ultrasound. While it is not life-threatening, an SVT should not be ignored. If left untreated, SVT can become DVT in 65% of patients.

To lessen your chances of SVT or DVT, we recommend getting plenty of exercise and spending minimal time sitting during the day. If you sit at a desk for much of the day, frequent breaks for movement are encouraged.
To safely eliminate blood clots, Dr. Perlmutter may recommend anti-clotting medication and support stockings to combat the formation of any new blood clots in your leg(s).
March is Deep Vein Thrombosis Awareness Month, so now is the perfect time to schedule an appointment to make sure your veins are healthy and to seek treatment for any potential blood clots in your legs.
